The rich, vibrant story of Southbury, Connecticut

The community that eventually became Southbury was settled in 1673 on land originally owned by the Pootatuck tribe. It was first a part of Woodbury, but in 1787, Southbury was incorporated as a separate town. In the 19th century, Southbury became the home of mills, tanneries and distilleries powered by the Pomperaug and Housatonic Rivers.

Southbury had a Russian artists’ colony in the 1920s, co-founded by Leo Tolstoy’s son Ilya.

Other famous residents of Southbury have included the television legend Ed Sullivan, the photographer Wallace Nutting, and Jan Miner, who was Madge the Manicurist in a series of Palmolive commercials.
